Durham Cathedral is a Norman building constructed between 1093 and 1133 in the Romanesque style.
It was founded as a monastic cathedral built to house the shrine of St Cuthbert. The Cathedral has been in continuous use since its original construction 900 years ago. It remains a place of worship and pilgrimage, and is also an important visitor attraction. It holds over 1700 services a year, and costs £60,000 per week (that’s about £6 per minute!) to maintain. The Cathedral offers a variety of spaces that can be hired for various events including concerts, conferences, wedding ceremonies and wedding receptions and celebrations alike. With space to host over 600 delegates this is a truly iconic venue in which to host your next event. Championing local produce the Undercroft Restaurant has received a Taste Durham award in recognition of its support of local producers and the team are always on hand to discuss your plans. If you’re looking to put a spring in the step of your delegates then private cathedral tours or guided walks of the local woodland and riverbank can always be incorporated into your day. Or why not challenge them to head up the cathedral tower to take in the stunning views – they may even spot the Angel of the North on a clear day.
